Betty White was loved by many and her acceptance speech for her SAG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 proves why.

The Hollywood icon, who passed away just shy of her 100th birthday in 2021, had a career spanning over eight decades. Betty was known for starring in the TV sitcom The Golden Girls and films such as The Proposal, and she was presented with the award by her co-star in the film, Sandra Bullock. But the A-lister, who was 88 at the time, didn’t hold back from telling some home truths in her address.

Betty White gave hilarious speech when accepting her SAG Lifetime Achievement award

After a montage of her work was shown and being praised to the hilt by Sandra, Betty White took to the stage to accept her SAG Lifetime Achievement award. Though what she told the audience was mostly emotional and heartfelt, ever the comedian Betty couldn’t help but make some playful quips.

In her introduction, Sandra said: “She starred in four different television shows called The Betty White Show. Four. Most people would stop naming shows after themselves after the third one,” and Betty was quick to give it back.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart and from the bottom of my bottom, thank you for whatever.
Oh my dears, I can’t…” Betty began.

“And the fact that this lovely lady, she is such a wonderful one and with all the wonderful things that have happened to her.  Isn’t it heartening to see how far a girl as plain as she is can go,” she joked in response to Sandra, which made the then 45-year-old, laugh.

“71 years ago when I sang on an experiment thing, and it was called television, who would have dreamed it would culminate in an evening like this?

“I should be presenting an award to you for the privilege of working in this wonderful business all this time.”

“And you still can’t get rid of me,” Betty White laughed on the SAG Awards show stage.

Betty would feel ‘starstruck’ in front of other celebrities

“Actually, I may have more than two passions, but it’s none of your business,” she continued.

“I am still, to this day star struck. I look out at this audience and I see so many famous faces, but what really boggles my mind is that I actually know many of you, and I’ve worked with quite a few. Maybe had a couple…”

“And you know who you are,” she teased.

She concluded: “Back when I first started it would never even have occurred to me to imagine such a thing as this moment. And I still can’t believe I’m standing here. This is the highest point of my entire professional life.”

Backstage after the SAG awards show Betty White had nothing but praise for Sandra.

She told reporters: “She’s the epitome of what a movie star should be. She’s not only gorgeous and talented, but she’s also the most down-to-earth human being.”

Fans thought her speech was hilarious and some even still bring it up 14 years later on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter).

A fourth said: “Would’ve loved to see what happened after the mic drop “… and you know who you are”

“The lady was sharp as hell and could deliver a line like no one else [red heart emoji],” another penned.

Someone else said: “Never forget the time Betty White used a Lifetime Achievement Award speech to remind everyone that she was STILL at the top of her game. [red heart emoji].”
