Taylor Swift fans are convinced new song The Alchemy on The Tortured Poets Department is about her boyfriend Travis Kelce.

This is not a drill. The eleventh studio album from Taylor Swift has arrived, and to say there’s a lot to digest on The Tortured Poets Department would perhaps be the understatement of the century. Swifties were surprised to find that the icon had dropped a double album edition with a mammoth 31 tracks, and across the two-hour runtime is a lyrically dense journey of love and loss. Much speculation has been made about which songs are about The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, but there’s one song that simply can’t be…

Taylor Swift unveils The Alchemy on The Tortured Poets Department

On the standard edition of the album, made up of 16 tracks, The Alchemy is the penultimate song and the lyrics are syrupy sweet with a recurring football theme.

“I’m making a comeback to where I belong”, Taylor declares in the lyrics.

There are lots of sports-adjacent lyrics peppered throughout the track, with references including “the team”, “the benches”, “winning streak”, and more.

“Beer sticking to the floor,” she sings. “… cheers chanted, ’cause they said there was no chance, trying to be the greatest in the league, where’s the trophy, he just comes running over to me.”

Along with music lyrics like “Shirts off, and your friends lift you up over their heads,” conjuring images of victory on the field, it’s hard not to draw associations with Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs football player whom Tay has been dating since September last year.

Taylor’s fans are convinced The Alchemy is about Travis Kelce

With so many sports-esque lyrics being tossed around on The Alchemy, it’s no wonder fans have been so quick to argue it’s clearly about Travis.

“Alchemy is about Travis Kelce,” one fan declared without hesitation, “like wtf his first song!”

Another tweeted: “The alchemy is about Travis and I won’t take any slander, arguments, or comments about this.”

“The Alchemy is definitely our Travis song and I’m so here for it!” one tweeted in triumph.

Although the ambiguity of certain tracks throughout the album has stirred debate over whether they’re about Joe Alwyn or Matty, there’s very little budging room for people on this one.

“Wow The Alchemy is 100% about Travis Kelce, you can’t convince me otherwise,” another tweeted.

Others have also argued that the double-album track So High School is also about her current boo, and it’s hard to dispute that one either.

The Tortured Poets Department is now streaming.
