The Newt’s place as one of the best hotels in Britain was secured with the starry-eyed approval of Michel Roux Jr as he took Fred Sirieix along for a romantic dinner on the BBC’s Remarkable Places to Eat series. Predictably stylish, since it’s the handiwork of the former editor of ELLE Decoration in South Africa, the Somerset estate spans the original Hadspen House (built in the 17th century and remodelled during the Georgian era), apple orchards, a cider press, gardens, woodlands and lakes.

There are suites in the listed building, rooms in the stables and clock house, the self-contained granary, which is ideal for couples, and the 17-bedroom Farmyard, with a bar, games-room and indoor pool, that is available for exclusive hire.

The spa makes use of the land’s bounty – with treatments featuring ingredients plucked from the medicinal-herb garden outside – as does the food and drink offering, which includes a gelateria, high tea on the terrace and, of course, plenty of cider.
